WHAT IS DAMASK?
The architecture of Jacquard

More than a fabric: a pattern created directly within the material.

Since 1888, Le Jacquard Français has carried on the tradition of damask, a complex and precise weaving technique in which patterns emerge from the interlacing of warp and weft threads.
Unlike a printed fabric, the design is not applied to the material: it is woven into the textile itself. This reversible construction reveals the patterns on both the right and wrong sides, with a unique interplay of relief, light and depth.
The process takes its name from Joseph Marie Jacquard, a French inventor of the 19th century. It relies on a loom fitted with a punched-card mechanism. These cards, punched according to the desired pattern, individually guide the warp threads and make it possible to create varied and sophisticated patterns at the heart of the fabric. Jacquard weaving thus offers great creative freedom and gives textiles a unique visual richness and texture.
